System Administration and Operation handling is a vast field andalso was the first one which I faced straight after I left college. Theentire system was massive in size and intricate in functionality, it containedSubscriber billing, automatic fax of the user required document, providingvoice response to the phone interface with the client.
The system was judiciously divided into modules which took caredifferent functionality such as scheduling, handling online fax request,doing a fax store and forward job. The system is inherently complex dueits 'Workflow' nature and the business requirements of extreme flexibility.

This was an Enterprise wide system, developed with an aim of automatingthe entire production system of� our site ( www.expressindia.com).The existing at that time was ill-equipped, both in terms of design andcapacity to cope with the massive volumes of information gathered by TIEOMLfor its publishing..
The system was required to automate the entire flow from news informationwhich was being retrieved from our flagship company's ( Indian Express) database.
The systems consist of a multiple server hierarchy, spread acrossa WAN(leased telephone lines from Mumbai to California� our internationalsite) . Some of the challenging aspects of these systems are
Integration of cross platform products likeFoxpro database to Linux MySql database server.
Network traffic optimisation across a WAN
Data Consolidation and transmission acrossthe WAN to� enable� suitable mirroring of our� Local siteand International site.

The Project was to enable an Inbox direct mailer service in alliancewith Netscape, where the clients would choose the kind of service it requiresand the categories of news it wanted. The same should be automaticallyemailed to him every day as soon the daily site is up.
The challenges presented in the system were :�

The project was to develop a Browser based Interactive client interfacefor the searching� and� retrieving of News Article from our companiesNews Database and also the complied database of more than Twenty publications.This news retrieval by clients was to be charged to them as per news articleand period of access of the news in our archives. This package was to beimplemented� in Our Cybercafe's first then would actually be out onInternet Site for external access also.
The whole project is being implemented in DB2 database environmentkeeping in mind the scalability of the database in coming years.�The frontend choosen is Java applet interface� as it would providethe necessary user friendliness� and also the software capabilitieslike AWT, event handlers, and convenient database connectivity .
The challenges presented by the system were :�
Database design where the table / databasesize will increase mainfolds in future.
Providing Keyword/String search and mainpulationfacilities.
Search using Boolean and freetext capabilities.
Providing automated pricing capability of theNews Article.
